Baghdad – Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani conveyed his country’s thanks and gratitude on Saturday for His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s decision to reopen the Moroccan embassy in Damascus.
In a press statement following his talks with his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita, Syria’s top diplomat hailed the relations between both countries as “very good.”
“We thank His Majesty the King and the Moroccan government for their interest in enhancing these ties, which we aspire to elevate to a distinguished level, particularly in the areas of economics and investment within the Arab world.”
During the talks, Morocco’s Foreign Minister reiterated the decision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI announced in the speech He delivered at the 34th Arab Summit on Saturday in Baghdad.
In His speech, HM the King announced the Kingdom’s decision to reopen its embassy in Damascus, which was closed down in 2012, stressing that this “will contribute to opening up broader prospects for the historical relations between our countries and our peoples.”
In this regard, the Sovereign reaffirmed Morocco’s unwavering, historical position on Syria, previously set out in the letter He had sent to President Ahmed Al-Sharaa, standing by and supporting the brotherly Syrian people as they seek to fulfill their aspirations for freedom, security, and stability and to preserve their country’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
As part of the implementation of the Royal Decision, Bourita announced that a technical delegation will conduct a visit to Syria next week to assess the preparations for the embassy’s reopening, which will serve as a communication and coordination channel in various fields.
Al-Shaibani also announced the dispatch of a technical team to open the Syrian embassy in Rabat.
