Patients seeking medical services at the Oncology Department of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) are being turned away as doctors escalate their strike action due to malfunctioning equipment.

While the doctors are not accepting new cases or other referrals to the department, those who were scheduled to receive their medication are still being attended to.

The strike action, which began on Monday, was initiated by doctors at the department in response to what they perceive as delays by the hospital’s management in repairing the Linear Accelerator, a device used for Radiotherapy services.

As a result of the doctors’ action, some patients are now compelled to seek medical care at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.

On Tuesday, a patient told Citi News, “They are still on strike. The doctors are not coming they are not working. Today only one doctor is working. So it is true, we are being affected because my wife is seriously sick and there is no doctor taking care of her.

“We’ve seen some patients here. Some have left and have not returned because of the strike. The government should pay attention to them. Government should come in and provide their needs so they can work.”

Another patient shared, “They said they are on strike so we can go home. That is what they said to us. They said it was a tumour that had caused his blindness. His liver has been damaged a little and they said we should come so he will be injected, but we came and they said they are on strike so we should go home.”
