The Eastern Regional House of Chiefs has delivered a decisive ruling in the protracted Kwahu chieftaincy dispute, affirming Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II as the legitimate Omanhene of the Kwahu Traditional Area.

In a ruling issued on June 11, 2025, the House granted an interlocutory injunction restraining Baffour Akoto Osei from interfering in the authority, duties, and status of Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II. The House described recent attempts to destool Daasebre as invalid, emphasizing that such actions contravened both the customs of the Kwahu people and Ghana’s chieftaincy laws.

The injunction followed a petition filed by Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II, who alleged that a group of traditional leaders—namely Nana Simpe Qwiredu III, Nana Asiedu Kwabeng III, Nana Ntim Sampong II, Baffour Nyarko Kyerefo II, Okyeame Akuoko Boateng, Nana Odame Ansong, and Baffour Akoto Osei—had unlawfully attempted to undermine his authority as Omanhene.

During the hearing, legal counsel for Daasebre argued that his client remained the duly enstooled and gazetted chief of the Kwahu Traditional Area. Citing a Search Report marked as Exhibit “A”, the counsel maintained that Daasebre had not been formally or lawfully destooled, as no charges had been brought before the Judicial Committee of the Regional House of Chiefs, the only legally recognized body for such proceedings.

“The destoolment process as claimed by the respondents is baseless, both in customary practice and under the Chieftaincy Act,” the counsel stressed.

After a review of the evidence, the House concluded that the purported destoolment was without merit and issued a restraining order against the respondents. It further prohibited Baffour Akoto Osei from presenting himself as the Omanhene or performing any related functions, particularly at the Kwahuhene Palace in Abene.

This ruling is a major development in the ongoing Kwahu chieftaincy impasse and reasserts the authority of Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II as the undisputed traditional ruler of the area.

The New Republic will continue to provide comprehensive coverage on subsequent developments in this matter.
