Students from the Department of Communication at the University of Ghana conducted a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative at Abia D/A Basic School in the Ningo-Prampram District, focusing on climate change education and recycling. The group, EcoAction Ghana, aimed to enhance climate communication by dispelling myths surrounding climate change and promoting the recycling and reuse of plastic waste among students.
Team leader of EcoAction Ghana, Eulogia A. N. Aidoo emphasized the project’s goal of improving students’ understanding of climate issues by encouraging recycling or reuse of plastic waste. She noted that many students expressed the of desire to become environmental ambassadors following the engagement.
“We have engaged the students on climate change and how to recycle or reuse plastic waste by turning them into useful items such as pencil holders, trash bins, and many more.” She stated.
The initiative not only raised awareness but also inspired students to take active roles in environmental protection. Aidoo encouraged schools to integrate climate change topics into their curricula to foster continuous awareness among learners.
Another member of EcoAction Ghana, Patricia Selase Apietu urged students to utilize platforms like social media and traditional media to voice their opinions on climate issues within their communities. She emphasized that their contributions are vital in the ongoing fight against climate change.
Participating student Foli Felicia Mawuse shared her insights, stating that the program significantly deepened her understanding of climate change. She committed to encouraging her family to engage in tree planting initiatives as a means of environmental protection.
Another student, Fiali Mathias, challenged misconceptions about climate change, asserting that it is a scientific issue rather than a spiritual one. He expressed newfound confidence in communicating these facts to his family, highlighting the educational impact of the program.
With support from Mr. Freeman Amanor, the science facilitator of the school, EcoAction Ghana plans to establish an Eco-Group at Abia D/A Basic School. This group will continue advocating for climate change awareness and environmental protection efforts within the school community.
This CSR activity aligns with broader educational initiatives in Ghana aimed at integrating climate change education into school curricula. The Ghana Education Service has been actively promoting environmental stewardship among students through various programs and partnership.
