Alan slams Kufuor’s endorsement of Bawumia, says he’s venturing into dangerous territory

Alan slams Kufuor’s endorsement of Bawumia, says he’s venturing into dangerous territory

The Founder and flagbearer for the Movement for Change, Alan Kyerematen has criticised former President John Agyekum Kufuor over his recent endorsement of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer for the 2024 general elections.

In an interview with selected journalists on Sunday, 17 November, former President Kufuor called on Ghanaians to support Dr Bawumia in the December elections, describing him as the most suitable candidate to lead the nation.

The former President emphasised that, given the current global circumstances, he believes Bawumia’s presidency could significantly improve Ghana’s economy.

“Considering the present global context, I genuinely believe that Ghana’s economy would witness substantial growth if Bawumia were elected as President,” Kufuor stated. “With divine guidance, he is more than capable of fulfilling this promise, and I urge you to back his candidacy.”

“I have observed his remarkable economic skills during my presidency when he was an essential part of the Bank of Ghana’s team under Governor Dr Paul Acquah, helping to stabilise the national currency.”

Reacting to Mr Kufuor’s remarks, Alan Kyerematen expressed his disapproval, claiming that the former president’s endorsement compromises the impartiality expected from a statesman of Kufuor’s stature.

Speaking on Oyerepa TV on Monday, 18 November, Mr Kyerematen suggested that Kufuor’s actions could tarnish his long-standing political legacy.

“Kufuor is my uncle, and I hesitate to publicly criticise him,” Kyerematen said. “However, his endorsement has cast a significant shadow over his political career. Have you noticed how his comments have sparked negative reactions and criticism from the public?”

Kyerematen went on to express his concerns over Kufuor’s involvement in active politics at this stage, warning that it could erode the respect he commands across the country.

“He has long been a respected figure in Ghana, so why would he choose to involve himself in partisan politics in this manner? His actions are regrettable, and he is venturing into dangerous territory,” he added.

Despite his familial connection to Kufuor, Kyerematen did not shy away from pointing out that the endorsement has already provoked a backlash.

He urged the former president to reconsider his stance, indicating that Kufuor “knows exactly what he is doing.”

Having split from the NPP to lead his newly-formed Movement for Change, Kyerematen has presented himself as a viable alternative to both the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming elections.
