A/R: Kumasi traders want Kejetia market manager fired

The Combined Kumasi Kejetia Traders Association has issued a two-week ultimatum to President Akufo-Addo, demanding the dismissal of the market’s Managing Director, Mr. Kofi Duffour, over allegations of mismanagement and poor maintenance.

During a press conference in Kumasi today, Tuesday, 25 June 2024, General Secretary of the Association Mr. Reuben Amey accused the Managing Director of congesting the market by allocating spaces to hawkers, contrary to the market’s initial plan.

Mr Amey warned that the market is at risk of collapse if immediate action is not taken.

Mr. Amey also highlighted concerns about fire safety, noting that firefighters were forced to evacuate due to the lack of temporary relocation space while structural repairs were underway.

In addition, Mr. Amey accused Mr. Duffour of withholding GHS 300,000 meant for fire victims, which was presented by the Vice President, and failing to distribute the funds to affected traders.

The association has, therefore, called on President Akufo-Addo to act within the given timeframe or face unspecified actions from the traders.

Meanwhile, victims of a recent market fire have urged the government to reconstruct the damaged section, warning that they will withhold their votes in the December elections if their demands are not met.
