The Deputy Minority Chief Whip in Parliament, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, is demanding that the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, be summoned before Parliament to explain reports that President John Dramani Mahama used a private jet allegedly linked to his brother for official travel.
According to Shaib, the development raises serious questions about transparency and accountability, especially in light of Ablakwa’s past criticism of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for using chartered luxury aircraft during official trips.
Raising the matter during the Business Statement on the floor of Parliament on Friday, March 13, 2026, the Weija MP urged the House to take keen interest in the issue and summon the Foreign Affairs Minister to provide full disclosure.
“It is important that Parliament, which has oversight responsibility over the public purse, ensures transparency and accountability in matters involving public expenditure and the use of private assets for state functions,” Shaib stated.
He specifically wants Ablakwa to clarify whether the aircraft used by President Mahama belongs to businessman Ibrahim Mahama, the President’s brother, and whether the state incurred any cost in the use of the jet for official duties.
Shaib argued that the matter is of public interest and requires clear answers to avoid perceptions of double standards in the management of state resources.
The Deputy Minority Chief Whip also used the opportunity to remind government of its pledge to construct airports across all regions of Ghana, insisting that Parliament must be fully briefed on the status of such commitments.
“As representatives of the people, it is important that we are well informed about such projects, particularly where they have implications for national development and public resources,” he added.
