The Member of Parliament for Mfantseman Constituency in the Central Region, Ophelia Mensah Hayford, has recently taken in a 3-day-old baby boy who was delivered by a mentally challenged mother in School Kessim, a suburb of Mankessim.
Madam Vivian Ewusi, the good samaritan, shared her experience in an interview with the media.
She explained that her daughter had alerted her to the sound of a newborn baby crying in the neighbourhood. Concerned, she rushed to the scene to investigate.
Upon arrival, she witnessed the mentally challenged mother tying the umbilical cord around the baby’s neck. Despite the challenging circumstances, the mother successfully delivered the baby on her own.
After rescuing the baby and his mother, she reported the incident to the Mankessim Police Station. They advised her to take both the baby and mother to the Mercy Women Catholic Hospital in Mankessim for medical assessment, which she promptly did.
Madam Vivian also informed the MP, who happened to live nearby, about the situation. The MP wasted no time and visited the hospital to meet with the medical facility’s management and the municipality’s Social Welfare officers. Together, they discussed the necessary procedures for the MP to adopt the innocent baby and how best to assist the mentally challenged mother.
Ali Abubakar Amoah, the Assemblyman for New Nkusukum Electoral Area, also known as Champion Sorin, expressed his frustration with the increasing number of mentally ill individuals seen on the streets of the area.
He suspects that this may be due to the lack of proper psychiatric hospitals in the region.
The mentally derailed mother is currently on admission at the Mercy Women’s Catholic Hospital as nurses continue to monitor her condition
