Election 2024: We’ll petition Asantehene over alleged rigging plot – NDC
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) says it will petition Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II over an alleged rigging plot in the Ashanti Region involving the General Officer Commanding the Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, Brigadier General Michael Opoku.
The party claims that the alleged scheme, allegedly orchestrated under government directives, is aimed at interfering with the electoral process, starting with the special voting exercise scheduled for December 2.
Addressing a press briefing on Tuesday, November 19, the NDC’s National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, stated that the party is seeking the Asantehene’s intervention to prevent potential violence.
“We are going to ensure that the King of the Ashanti people, who is very much interested in the peace of our nation and the peace of the processes leading to, during, and after the December 7 election, we will officially draw his attention to these developments because the headquarters of the operation of this guy [Brigadier General Michael Opoku] is Kumasi.
“And I know that the Otumfuo cherishes the peace that the people of Kumasi and Ashanti region enjoy, and he will want to take an interest in this matter and call this guy to order.”
